Some people like to stay at the Marriot while others prefer Hilton hotels. But if you’re tired of the same old routine on your vacations, why not try something entirely new? Here are just a few of the world’s craziest hotels and what you can expect from your stay.
ICEHOTEL
Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. A hotel made completely from ice may not speak to the beach-seeking crowd, but if you’re on the market for a vacation that’s one-of-a-kind, you could do worse than a stay at this amazing Swedish hotel. And you might be surprised to find that absolutely everything is sculpted from ice, including guest rooms, furnishings, and even plates and glasses. You’ll have to stay bundled up during your trip, but beds come with furry coverlets and the ice-sculpting classes available to guests will help you to warm up (as will a few sips of vodka from a molded-ice shot glass).
Poseidon Undersea Resort
Poseidon Mystery Island, Fiji. If warm waters and white-sand beaches are more your speed, consider the Poseidon Undersea Resort nestled in the crystal-clear waters of the Fijian islands. Yes, you read that correctly – IN the water. Guest rooms consist of all of the amenities one might expect from a luxury hotel, plus walls made of acrylic that allow you to gaze out into the open ocean on all sides (as well as above). Of course, you can always stay at the beachside resort above water, but wouldn’t you really rather experience the gorgeous marine life from 40 feet below?
Sanya Nanshan Treehouse
Jiangsu, China. If you’re looking to get away from it all and enjoy the majesty of nature, you really can’t get much farther from civilization than this (and still have electricity). Known as “The Big Beach in the Sky”, this treehouse accommodation located in the midst of a 5,000-acre Buddhist botanical garden offers views of the greenery (interspersed with temples) and the gorgeous South China Sea. It’s a must-visit oddity for anyone who needs a little peace and quiet for a few days. Treehouse sleeps four and is accessible by rope-and-plank suspension bridge.
DasParkHotel
Ottensheim, Austria. This is not a hotel for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia, but if you’re interested in eco-friendly accommodations that allow for a sort of communal existence, then this odd hotel on the Danube River may be right up your alley. The guest rooms were created from recycled concrete pipes dropped into a park and outfitted with beds and lighting. One whole side opens up so that you can watch the outside world as you drift off to dreamland or eat your breakfast in bed. And while bathroom facilities service the whole park (they’re provided for public use), guests pay for their usage on a donation basis.
Exploranter Overland Hotel Truck
São Paulo, Brazil. If you’ve ever considered traveling via a tour bus with beds, then this hotel should definitely catch your fancy. Take a weeklong trek through Brazil, Argentina, and Chile aboard this traveling hotel with beds for 28, plus a full kitchen and bathroom. You’ll save a lot of time since the tour bus travels while you sleep, taking you to new locales overnight, and you’ll get to see some of the most amazing parts of South America along the way, including the world’s largest freshwater wetlands (Pantanal).
You may have spent time in exotic locales, at lodgings ranging from Cyprus hotels to Japanese tubes to Australian B&Bs. But until you try out some of these crazy hotels from around the world you’re really not getting all you could from your vacation destination. So check them out today!
