As a planet we are totally obsessed with food. Whether we have we have more than enough or are on the brink of starvation. You only have to look at how many people are obese in the US and in the UK to see that we constantly crave food!
So it’s no surprise that all over the globe food festivals are held, even in the poorer areas where food is scarce. Their are loads of different foods available to taste at these festivals. Everything from apples to seafood and tomatoes to unusual meat products.
Food is now powering our cars as well as us! This electric car runs on chocolate and vegetable oil!
With so many food lovbers around the globe there are naturally thousands of foodie occasions held every year. So how do you find the best ones? I personally think we should be searching out some of the weirder food festivals that are a bit out of the norm! The kinds of ones where people throw fruit in competitions, eat bugs and have you discovering foods and combinations you never knew existed!
So here are some of the Weirdest Global Food festivals you could find yourself at in the future…

Maine’s Lobster Festival is held every year in August in Rockland, Maine. They celebrate everything surrounding the lobster. With everything from cooking demonstrations, parades, lobster crate races and entertainment, there is something for all the family to enjoy.

The Tunarama has been running in Port Lincoln since 1962. You can enjoy all sorts of games, entertainment and contests there including the very weird tuna tossing competition. Luckily they tend to use a decoy tuna and not a real one as that would get a little messy!

Chinchilla is the biggest supplier of melons in Australia and to celebrate this they hold this crazy festival where everything and everyone is melon mad. You can watch or take part in melon skiing, pip spitting competitions, melon bungee and many more crazy melon games!
La Tomatina, Spain

You guessed it, La Tomatina is a festival celebrating the humble tomato. It dates back to the 1940’s and 50’s when young men who were fighting in the town started throwing vegetables at each other and so the tradition began of throwing tomatoes. The festival is now held on the last Wednesday in August in Bunol, Valencia. I wonder what they do with all the passata they’ve made?
Battle of the Oranges, Italy

The Battle of the Oranges is similar to the La Tomatina in Spain as in it takes place in Ivrea in Northern Italy. They are not sure how exactly it came about but it involves teams of locals throwing oranges at each other, in quite a violent manner. It is supposedly the biggest food fight in Italy!

The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival is a festival that was created to show people what wild produce you can eat and enjoy from your local area. There is everything on offer from Crocodile steaks to grubs and beetles. There are also fancy dress and photo competitions or you could just sit back, stuff your face with creepy crawlies and watch the festivals entertainment!

The Night of the Radishes takes place around Christmas time on the 23rd of December in Oaxaca City, Mexico and dates back to around 1897. At this festival they carve large radishes into sculptures of mainly nativity scenes and saints to celebrate the coming of Christ. This weird tradition attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The Waikiki Spam Jam is held in Hawaii each year to celebrate the tinned meat spam, which is a favourite dish of all Hawaiians! Local restaurants cook up various different recipes using spam, while the road fills with pedestrians looking at spam merchandise.

The annual Bugfest takes place at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, where all it’s four floors are filled with buggy fun. This is especially for children and all us adults who act like big kids! There are Exhibits, face painting, bug races and even cookery displays using bugs in the recipes!
